Trump singles out Australia for insufficient Middle East support. Albanese's government says no formal request was made — a diplomatic standoff built on deliberate miscommunication.
Trump demands Australia do more in the Middle East, and Albanese responds that nobody asked — the diplomatic equivalent of claiming you can't help move house because you weren't formally invited. The genius of it is that both men are telling the truth: one wants vassals, the other wants plausible deniability. The ANZUS alliance has become a conversation where one side issues commands and the other pretends not to hear them, and both call it partnership.
